The bell of this landmark public school first rang for its pupils in 1922, and the school has remained in constant use since then. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it initially served students in eight grades and was also a meeting place for early school 4-H clubs in the 1920s. In 1935, the Civilian Conservation Corps established Camp Harrison on the site, one of 67 camps in West Virginia during the New Deal era. A museum there recognizes the many achievements of the CCC program across the state and honors the memory of CCC participants everywhere.
