After the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad entered the county in 1881, during Hillsboro's growth, contractor John Self Robinson built this residence in 1883 for R. S. Lumpkin, who lived from 1837 to 1921, and his wife Mary Kelly. The house's style reflected the success of Lumpkin, the city's first maker of saddles and harness, who was also a Confederate veteran, a horse fancier, and a volunteer fireman. The house was owned from 1952 to 1970 by the Brin family, who were merchants, and since 1970 by Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Loveless. It became a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1973. In 1974, the R.C. Crow family purchased the home and extensively restored it in 1983 on its 100th anniversary. It entered the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
