Dunns Pond Mound, near Huntsville in northwestern Ohio on Indian Lake’s southeastern side, is a Native American earthwork valued for its archaeological potential and long history of use. Generally attributed to the prehistoric Hopewell peoples and built sometime between 300 B.C. and A.D. 600, it may first have served as a charnel house tied to Hopewell mortuary practices before Late Woodland peoples reused it as a burial place. Its significance also comes from its place within a broader concentration of earthworks around Indian Lake. After the Miami River was dammed in 1860 and the lake expanded, other related sites may have been submerged, leaving this mound an especially important survivor.
