Transportation
33
The steamship Savannah stood as a symbol of the ability, courage, and pioneering spirit of Captain Moses Rogers and the far-sighted people of Savannah who put their faith in a new means of power. A lone steamship in a world of sail, the vessel departed Savannah on May 22, 1819, and arrived in Liverpool, England, on June 20, 1819, becoming the first steam powered ship to cross the far reaches of the Atlantic Ocean.
