Camp Talley was a camp of instruction established near old Coffeeville soon after the governor's June 8, 1861, proclamation requesting voluntary popular support for troop training. Merchants were expected to provide goods, farmers food, laborers their work, and camp officers leadership, while trainees received no pay until they were mustered into the Confederate army.
