Turkeycock Mountain stands in southern Virginia on the line between Franklin and Henry counties, rising 1,657 feet from the eastern foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Part of it is protected within the public Turkeycock Wildlife Management Area. The mountain is also associated with an early local homestead at its foot, the family home of Samuel Calland, who lived from 1750 to 1808. Once a 22-room house, the homestead survives in part as a one-and-a-half-story, six-room building with an earthen basement. Its remaining high-ceilinged main room, pine wainscoting, brick chimney, and staircase connect the mountain landscape to one of the area's older domestic sites.
