The Chillowist Trail formed the eastern junction of one of the most historic pathways in Okanogan County, connecting the Okanogan and Methow River valleys. Also known by Indians as "the old horse trail," it followed the Chillowist Creek valleys into higher country, passed through the Chillowist Valley into the rugged Three Devils switchbacks, and then descended along Benson Creek to the Methow River. Indians used this trail for 3500 years or more, and in the 1880's pioneers followed the route to reach the Methow. It also served as a fur-trading route and an early-day horseback mail route.
