The Hansford County courthouse stood one fourth mile northwest of this site. Built in 1891, it was the first courthouse in the county and was made of red brick hauled overland by wagon from Dodge City, Kansas. Hansford County was surveyed in 1876 and organized in 1889, and it was named for John M. Hansford, a Texas Congressman and judge.
