Constructed from 1832 to 1853, the Wabash and Erie Canal was the nation's longest canal, connecting Lake Erie at Toledo with the Ohio River at Evansville. A key portion in Carroll County included the Deer Creek Lake Dam, built from 1838 to 1840 one mile west. Various canal structures are still in evidence.
