As night began to fall on April 6, 1865, the hard-fought battles of Little Sailor's Creek and the crossroads near the Marshall Farm drew to a close, and Federal surgeons worked by the little natural light still available inside the main doorways of the Overton/Hillsman House to save as many wounded as possible from both armies. Hospital stewards prepared men for surgery, assisted with amputating limbs, bandaging wounds, and trying to comfort the wounded. The house, built by Moses Overton in the early 1770's and occupied by the family of James Moses Hillsman, became the Sixth Corps field hospital. Hillsman, a former captain in the 44th Virginia Infantry, had been captured at Spotsylvania in May 1864 while commanding a detachment of sharpshooters and remained a prisoner of war as battle raged across his farm. During the fighting, his wife Lucy Blanton Hillsman, his mother Martha Overton Hillsman, two children, and eight servants were forced to stay in the basement warming kitchen while the floor in the entry hall became soaked with blood and the cries of the wounded and dying sounded above them. After surgeries were completed, amputated limbs were thrown outside, and men were either carried outdoors to recover or placed in one of the house's four rooms. Before leaving, Federal troops temporarily buried their own dead on the farm until they were removed to Poplar Grove National Cemetery in Petersburg, Virginia, while the Confederate dead were left unburied until former Hillsman slaves buried them in mass, unmarked graves on the battlefield. Afterward, Lucy Hillsman left the house with her family and never returned. Lieutenant George Peck of the 2nd Rhode Island Infantry, one of the wounded, recalled being carried into a crowded room where severely wounded officers filled the beds and floor, his head lay beside the hall doorway near the operating table where surgeons worked through the night, and despite the constant passage to the kitchen and the misery around him, he slept quietly until daylight after his wet clothes were removed and he was wrapped in army blankets.
