Lead Mountain, a 1,479-foot peak in eastern Maine north of Beddington on the Hancock-Washington county line, is notable less for height than for how prominently it rises from the surrounding landscape, making it visible from far away. Its name appears to come from pyrrhotite in the local bedrock, which can be mistaken for lead, rather than from any major lead deposit. Part of its southern side lies within the Bear Brook Watershed in Maine, a long-running acid-deposition research site. Though privately owned, the mountain is open to hikers, and its summit offers views toward Acadia National Park and the Gulf of Maine.
