Hooper Island Light is an offshore cast-iron “sparkplug” lighthouse in Chesapeake Bay west of Middle Hooper Island, built on a caisson foundation to guide navigation through difficult waters. First requested in 1897, it was begun in 1901 after delays in materials delivery, and its pneumatic foundation-setting method sank the cylinder to the needed depth. Taller than other Maryland caisson lights, it uniquely combines a watch room and lantern. Its fog signals and light changed over time, and it was automated in the early 1960s. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002, it remains active and was sold in 2022 for restoration despite severe access and utility limitations.
