Elwood Mead, a native of Patriot, Indiana, supervised construction of Hoover Dam on the Colorado River. Lake Mead was named for him. Appointed Director of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation by President Coolidge, he served under Presidents Hoover and Roosevelt and was the top authority on irrigation and reclamation.
