In the eighteen eighties, the colony of Linne was established a few miles east of Paso Robles after the Amerikanska Emigrant Kompaniet enticed Swedish immigrants to buy land by mail, sight unseen, through advertisements portraying a thriving five thousand acre farm community along the gushing, trout-filled Huero Hero River. Instead, pioneers arriving in San Luis Obispo County found only a brick hotel beside a mostly dry creek, yet many stayed and made homes in Linne, Creston, Templeton, and Paso Robles, though nothing remains at Linne today. Life in the small towns of eastern San Luis Obispo County was long shaped by farming and ranching, and throughout the nineteen hundreds settlers continued cattle grazing, planting dry-land wheat and barley, and cultivating fruit orchards and vegetable gardens. Though the golden, wind-swept grassland often appeared dry and barren, the region's soil was fertile and well adapted to agriculture, especially where artesian springs or river water was available. In the early twenty-first century, bright green fields and ripening golden vineyards became part of the Estrella River Valley landscape, supported by irrigation from deep water wells and a long growing season of warm days and cool evenings, while local roads, state highways, and roadside rest areas played a vital role in moving farm and ranch products to markets and shipping points. Promotional pamphlets highlighted flowing artesian wells, abundant crops, and sunshine, and artesian wells such as one on the Sacramento Ranch near Shandon drew water upward from underground aquifers under natural pressure without pumps. In the late nineteen tens, Walter Knott and his family first farmed in Shandon, raising fruits and vegetables on a strip of land between the Estrella River and the home of the Sacramento Ranch owner for the ranch hands.
