Gettysburg Battlefield encompasses the town and surrounding Pennsylvania landscape where the Battle of Gettysburg unfolded from July 1 to 3, 1863, its roads, ridges, hills, fields, and borough streets shaping every phase of the fighting. Landmark ground such as Cemetery Ridge, Culp’s Hill, Little Round Top, Devil’s Den, and the Angle became central to the battle’s most famous attacks and defenses. Afterward, the area became a place of burial, medical care, and remembrance, including the creation of Soldiers’ National Cemetery, where Abraham Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address. Early preservation efforts grew into a major memorial landscape and, in 1895, Gettysburg National Military Park.
