Montauk Point State Park occupies the eastern tip of Long Island and the easternmost point of New York State, where the Montauk Point Light has shaped the site’s identity since its authorization in 1792 and construction in 1796. The area also preserves evidence of coastal defense from World War I and World War II, including gun emplacements and concrete observation bunkers near Camp Hero. In 1839, the Amistad was captured near Montauk Point, and the enslaved Africans aboard briefly landed there before the case that reached the Supreme Court and strengthened national debate over slavery. Today the site is also a major destination for recreation and sightseeing.
