Red Gulch Dinosaur Tracksite, on public land near Shell in northern Wyoming, preserves an extensive assemblage of dinosaur footprints dating to the Middle Jurassic, about 160 to 180 million years ago, when this area lay along the shore of the Sundance Sea. Discovered in 1997 by Erik P. Kvale, the site holds a large and varied group of tracks, especially in an area called the ballroom, rather than evidence of a single species. Preserved in limestone low in the Sundance Formation and associated with marine fossils above and nearby, the tracksite reveals a brief shoreline setting between marine phases along a shifting Jurassic coastline.
