Founded in 1879 as part of Washington University, the institution evolved through moves, legal separation from the university in 1909, and later public tax support into today’s Saint Louis Art Museum in Forest Park. Housed in the former Palace of Fine Arts from the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition, it offers free admission and serves as a major civic museum for St. Louis City and County. Its collection of more than 34,000 objects spans antiquity to the present, with notable strengths in several fields and major holdings by Max Beckmann and George Caleb Bingham. A major expansion in 2013 broadened its gallery and support space.
