Rockville House stood at the northwest corner of Rockville and Suisun Valley Roads as a settlement and stage stop on the road between Sacramento and Benicia. The site included a hotel, a blacksmith's shop, and a few stores, and the area's stone buildings and walls were a notable feature. The Pony Express first used this new route on April 23, 1860, when a rider left Vacaville, rode southwest and then south to Fairfield, continued west on Rockville Road to Rockville House for a final relay stop and a fresh horse, and then departed for Benicia at about 5:20 A.M. heading south with Mt. Diablo visible on the southern horizon in the early morning light.
