Black Pond Wildlife Management Area
Nature
Black Pond Wildlife Management Area is a 526-acre protected landscape on Lake Ontario’s eastern shore in New York, where barrier beaches, lagoons, wetlands, open water, dunes, and shoreline meet in a compact setting. Its forested sand dunes rise about 60 feet and are among the highest in the northeastern United States outside Cape Cod. North of Black Pond’s outlet, the shoreline shifts sharply from sand to a flat calcareous bedrock shelf. The area also anchors a broader conservation system, joining nearby protected lands within the Eastern Lake Ontario Marshes Bird Conservation Area and the Eastern Lake Ontario Barrier Beach and Wetland Complex.
