All those who served in the Civil War, also called the War to Suppress the Rebellion, from 1861 to 1865 are honored here, along with Waynesboro's only Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, Henry G. Bonebrake. A lieutenant in Company G, 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry, Bonebrake entered service at Waynesboro, was born in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, and received the medal on 3 May 1865 for his actions at Five Forks, Virginia, on 1 April 1865. As one of the first of Devin's Division to enter the works, he fought in a hand-to-hand struggle with a Confederate and captured his flag by superior physical strength.
