A circulating library effort began in Palestine in 1853 when Judge John Graham Gooch sought to establish one there, at first lending his own books. The original city library was later replaced by this structure, built in 1914 with aid from the Carnegie Foundation. It became a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1970.
