Bethesda Methodist Episcopal Church served for one hundred fifty years as a central religious and community gathering place on the Delmarva Peninsula. By the late 1800s, it was busy as a Sunday meeting place, during a time when many small churches dotted the countryside every few miles and nearly one-third of the local population belonged to either the Methodist Episcopal or Methodist Protestant churches. Like other congregations in the area, it belonged to a circuit in which a preacher traveled from church to church to conduct weekly services, and this church was part of the Laurel Circuit, which included fourteen churches. The church remains one of a few old country churches left basically unchanged, representing an important era in religious history. It once stood as part of a larger community setting that included a small schoolhouse across the street, a recreational building beside the church, and a cemetery that remains intact, with the earliest grave marker dating to 1879 and community members buried there.
