Rattlesnake Mountain is a 750-foot traprock peak in Farmington on the Metacomet Ridge, valued for sweeping cliff-top views, unusual plant communities, and varied microclimates. Rising sharply above the Farmington River valley, it connects with nearby ridges and is crossed by the 51-mile Metacomet Trail, making it a popular destination for hiking and other outdoor recreation. Its basalt formed during the rifting of North America from Africa and Eurasia, then was tilted by later faulting and earthquakes into the cliffs and ridgeline seen today. The mountain also serves migrating raptors, includes the local landmark Will Warren’s Den, and faces pressure from quarrying, development, and summit towers despite conservation efforts.
