To avoid repeating the foundation problems that plagued construction of the Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge in the 1880s, the engineers chosen for the Mid-Hudson Bridge were selected especially for their expertise with foundations. Even so, a foundation accident delayed the bridge's completion for more than a year, and correcting it was regarded as an engineering epic. The bridge came to be seen as a monument to the engineers' persistence, ingenuity, and skill.
