John Bartram, 1699-1777, was a third generation Quaker whose family settled in the Darby community in 1683. In 1728 he purchased 102 acres here and began a botanical garden. He traveled the North American English colonies collecting plants, seeds, and natural history specimens. Three generations of his family continued the garden.
