Thomas Smith, formerly a surveyor in Washington County, Virginia, was an early settler on Horsepen Creek at the mouth of Gilbert Creek. He served the Revolutionary cause as a private in the Virginia militia unit organized for the 1776 punitive Cherokee Expedition under Colonel William Christian's command. He was the half brother of Valentine and Joe Hatfield and the progenitor of many southern West Virginia families.
