Former Prince George's County Council member Marvin F. Wilson, representing District 5, strongly backed the Washington Redskins' relocation to Prince George's County because he believed it would bring economic returns for county residents, improvements to the Sheriff Road corridor, and development opportunities including a world-class Olympic training facility to showcase local talent. Despite strong opposition, he pursued community meetings so residents could voice concerns and receive answers, and he secured the partnership of former Redskins owner Jack Kent Cooke, who became a strong supporter of the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex through an investment of more than five million dollars and other in-kind contributions. With unanimous support from the Prince George's County Council chaired by Dorothy Bailey and from County Executive Wayne K. Curry, additional county-approved funding allowed The Maryland-National Capital Park Planning Commission to move forward with a design-build contract for a sports and learning complex that included a field house, aquatic center, gymnastics venue, fitness center, and later a learning component. Throughout construction at the Wilson Farm property, Marvin F. Wilson remained closely involved from the arrival of the first bulldozer to the laying of the final brick. Today, county residents and visitors use the two hundred-meter indoor track, four hundred-meter outdoor track, Olympic-sized swimming pool, fitness facility, gymnastics area, and learning opportunities for students of all ages.
