The first Bailey's Store stood in an earlier building at the end of the wharf on San Carlos Bay until it was destroyed by the hurricane of 1926. A new store was built in 1927 with roof gable ends tied down with braces and diagonal tongue-and-groove boards to strengthen the walls. Standing on a solid ridge, it faced San Carlos Bay and the county dock, with Miss Charlotta's Tea Room just west of it. The store remained in operation until 1966, when the new and current Bailey's General Store opened at Tarpon Bay Road and Periwinkle Way, and it is still run by the Bailey family.
