Daniel Boone attended this church, and Squire, Jr., Samuel, and Mary Boone were baptized here. In 1790, its name changed from Howard's Creek to Providence. William Bush, a member of Boone's second Kentucky expedition, built the present stone structure of native limestone. The United Baptists formed here in 1801. The building was passed to Negro Baptists in 1870 and was restored after slight fire damage in 1949.
