Glendalough State Park near Battle Lake, Minnesota, began in 1903 as Valentine’s Camp, a private summer retreat created by Ezra G. Valentine. After ownership passed through several hands, F. E. Murphy renamed it Glendalough and expanded it during the Depression, adding a game farm. Under later ownership by Cowles Media Company, the property hosted figures including Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower and Richard Nixon and Vice President Walter Mondale, and its historic lodge survives from that era. Donated to The Nature Conservancy on Earth Day 1990 and transferred to Minnesota in 1992, it became a state park known for quiet lake-centered recreation, restored prairie, wildlife, and recovery from damaging storms in 2004 and 2005.
