Southern Railway Company gave the property and buildings that had formerly housed Southern's largest steam locomotive servicing facility to the State of North Carolina in 1977, and Historic Spencer Shops, North Carolina's Transportation Museum, is administered by the Division of Archives and History of the Department of Cultural Resources.
