Howard's Covered Bridge, outside Smithonia, Georgia, spans Big Clouds Creek and preserves a notable example of rural transportation history. Built in 1905, the 168-foot Town lattice bridge used a traditional timber design with a crisscrossed web of planks and was fastened with wooden trunnels instead of metal bolts. The bridge was named for the Howard family, early settlers in the area in the late 1700s, and it was constructed with convict labor. Lumber for the project arrived on the Smithonia and Dunlap Railroad, which connected James Monroe Smith's farm to the Georgia Railroad at Dunlap. Its significance was recognized with listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
