Rooster Rock State Park lies east of Corbett on the south side of the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon, centered on a striking basalt column near Crown Point. The rock entered written history when the Lewis and Clark Expedition camped there on November 2, 1805. Originally called Cock Rock, and known in Chinook as iwash for its shape, it was later renamed Rooster Rock at Victor Trevitt’s urging to make the name more acceptable to the public. The park is also notable for the eastern part of its beach, the first officially designated clothing-optional beach in the United States, and for star parties held there by amateur astronomers, including OMSI.
