Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia preserves a concentrated landscape of the American Revolution and the early republic, including Independence Hall, Carpenters’ Hall, Congress Hall, Old City Hall, the Liberty Bell, the First and Second Banks of the United States, and Franklin Court. Within these sites, the Continental Congresses met, the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were debated and adopted, the Bill of Rights was ratified, new states were admitted, and the federal government operated while Philadelphia served as the temporary national capital. Created in 1948 and formally established on July 4, 1956, the district remains one of the nation’s most important historic settings.
