Since the first tide gauge was installed in Crescent City in 1933, thirty-seven tsunamis have been observed or recorded on the North Coast, all but five of them tele-tsunamis from distant sources. Known as "Tsunami Central," Crescent City has suffered more tsunami damage in the past 150 years than any other area on the U.S. west coast outside Alaska, with significant damage in the 1960, 1964, 2006, and 2011 tele-tsunamis and notable wave activity in 1946, 1952, 1957, and 1992. Although written records in Northern California extend only to the mid-18th century, oral history from the Tolowa and Yurok tribes, geologic evidence from lagoons south of Crescent City, and records from elsewhere on the Pacific rim point to much earlier major events, especially the January 26, 1700 tsunami associated with the last great rupture on the Cascadia Subduction Zone; sediment cores suggest wave heights there were at least twice those of the 1964 tsunami in Crescent City, and Yurok oral history places the waves at about 60ft. The worst historic tsunami came in 1964, when a magnitude 9.2 earthquake in Alaska sent waves to Crescent City; in less than five hours during the early morning of March 28, three smaller waves caused little damage before a nearly 21ft wave struck downtown, killed ten people, devastated 29 city blocks, destroyed more than 289 buildings and homes, and led to widespread demolition that reshaped downtown. That disaster also helped spur the U.S. Federal Government to establish the West Coast/Alaska Tsunami Warning Center in 1967 to track Pacific-wide tsunamigenic events. Tsunami danger here has also come from fast, debris-laden currents as well as flooding: strong currents from the 2006 magnitude 8.3 Kuril Islands earthquake destroyed three docks and damaged many pilings in the small boat basin, and the March 11, 2011 magnitude 9.2 Japanese earthquake destroyed all remaining boat basin structures and claimed the life of a local young man near the mouth of the Klamath River, even though the 2006 and 2011 events caused no significant flooding above the normal high tide zone. Because the harbor's topography funnels tsunamis into it, Crescent City rebuilt after 2011 and completed the Pacific basin's most advanced harbor in 2014, and after generations of repeated impacts Crescent City and coastal Del Norte County became among the most tsunami-aware and prepared areas in the United States.
