In 1992, the Rochester Hills Public Library at 500 Olde Town Road was dedicated on November 1 and opened the next day for regular service. Its exterior design, including bay windows and the use of stone and red brick, recalls the architecture of Rochester's old mills. The first documented library in the Rochester area was founded in 1872 by the Rochester Literary Society, followed by several succeeding organizations. Funded by a millage in 1925, the Avon Township Public Library opened in the First National Bank of Rochester building at Fourth Street and Main. In 1928, the library moved to the former C. K. Griggs residence at Fifth and Pine, but by the end of World War II it had outgrown that space. The community's first building specifically designed as a public library facility was built in 1950-51 on the site of the former Griggs home, and the Woodward Memorial Library, honoring donor Eva Woodward Parker, served as the library's home for forty-one years.
