Born on March 21, 1907, in a farmhouse east of Moulton near Komensky, Hugo J. Strieder rose from humble beginnings to become a physician serving Moulton and the surrounding area. Salutatorian of Moulton High School's class of 1926, he was encouraged by local dentist Dr. P.O. Puck to attend college and study medicine. He attended Baldwin's Business College in Yoakum, graduated from St. Edward's University in Austin in 1932, and from the University of Texas Medical School in Galveston in 1934. After internship and residency at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin, he declined a position there and returned home. In 1936 he married Lillian Migl and began a private practice in Rowena, and by 1940 he had opened his own practice in Moulton on Elm and Arnim streets. Fluent in German, he became the area's country doctor and was active in the Volunteer Fire Department, Knights of Columbus, and St. Joseph's Catholic Church. During World War II he served in the Navy Medical Corps, refining his diagnostic and surgical skills. After the war he bought land in 1946 and opened a clinic and hospital, helping link the era of pre-war doctors with medical advances shaped by the war. He treated everything from everyday wounds to polio outbreaks, but needing rest, he closed the hospital in 1953 and later took a job with the Atomic Energy Commission. He died on December 11, 1955, and was buried near his beloved Hospital on the Hill.
