Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the Moye Green Boarding House stands in downtown Portland east of the CSX Railroad line. A mid-20th century three-foot-high stone wall separates the house from adjacent streets and reflects the area's incremental growth patterns. Constructed about 1878 as a two-room, single-story Cumberland plan house, the dwelling quickly evolved to include an 1882 central-hall I-house. By 1892, later additions included decorative Folk Victorian detailing along with exterior one-story porches for boarding house guests. Significant for its contribution to Portland's economic growth, it operated as a local boarding house from about 1890 to about 1945 under the ownership of the Moye family and their descendants, the Greens. Located across from the railroad depot, it provided room and board to passengers, businessmen, visitors, and strawberry field workers for more than fifty years.
