The Steele's Bayou Expedition, from March 14-27, 1863, was one of several Union efforts to bypass Confederate defenses at Snyder's Bluff by sending amphibious forces through the Delta's waterways. Although the expedition failed in its objective, Confederate forces also failed to capitalize on an opportunity to capture or destroy Admiral David Dixon Porter's gunboats, which were mired in Deer Creek at Rolling Fork and narrowly avoided capture by Confederate infantry.
