Merle D. Hay, Thomas Enwright, and James B. Gresham were the first members of the Expeditionary Army of the United States in France to die, killed on November 3, 1917, and were remembered with the words that they died that others might live, stricken on the field of glory, alongside the Latin phrase “Dulse et decorium est pro patria mori,” translated as “It is sweet and glorious to die for one’s country.”
