Animals were essential to ranch and farm life in the last century. Horses were especially important because they provided transportation, pulled plows and other farm equipment, hauled cargo, and powered machines for jobs such as baling hay. The Boone family also raised hogs and cattle for food, tended sheep, kept chickens that roamed freely, and kept cows in the milk barn, where they were milked with help from family members and workers at Forest Home Farms.
