As the attack continues, the command retreats up the hill to this point, stopping only once or twice to fire at the pursuing warriors. Civilians Wheatley and Fisher, along with some non-commissioned officers, make a stand 250 yards to the north, slowing the attack. A skirmish line covers the draw to the front while the infantry covers the rear. The number of attacking warriors is overwhelming, and they begin to surround the position. The infantry withdraws toward the monument, discipline breaks down among the soldiers, and Lt. Grummond is dead. Not knowing the infantry’s situation, others make a break for them, survive a gauntlet of warriors in the low area to the south, cross the hill, find the infantry surrounded, and attempt to join them.
