William and Deborah Corrick settled here by 1830 and built this house in 1851, later altered many times, while William worked a large farm and Deborah bore 18 children. On July 13, 1861, Gen. Robert S. Garnett's Confederate forces fled past the Corrick house with Union troops in pursuit. In an effort to save his army, Garnett was shot on the nearby riverbank, and Union soldiers carried his body into the house. The house then served as a makeshift headquarters, hospital, and prison. In the Corrick family cemetery, a young Confederate soldier who died defending his general was buried, but no marker remains.
