The Old Frio County Jail is the oldest building in town. It was built in 1884 for $11,000 in a style typical of its era and served as both a jail and the jailer's residence until 1967. The second story and part of the first floor housed the jail. In 1885, two separate cells were added for female or juvenile prisoners or for the insane. For years, a well on the premises supplied water. During Prohibition in the early 20th century, law officers stored confiscated bootleg liquor in one of the cells.
