Eastern State Penitentiary, opened in Philadelphia in 1829, pioneered a new prison model that sought penitence through isolation, reflection, and strict routine rather than direct physical punishment. Designed by John Haviland, its vast radial plan and unusually modern cells influenced prison construction worldwide. The institution embodied the Pennsylvania system of separate confinement, with prisoners kept apart even during exercise and movement. Although intended as a moral and architectural ideal, overcrowding and harsh discipline eroded that vision, and solitary confinement was abandoned in 1913. Later known for famous inmates and a notable 1945 tunnel escape, it closed in 1971 and eventually became a museum and National Historic Landmark.
