The Ninety-Ninth Illinois Infantry, Pike County's famous Civil War regiment and the first regiment out of the state under the call of 1862, was mustered at Florence, Illinois, and embarked from this spot for St. Louis on August 23rd, 1862. It was under fire for 62 days and lost 187 men in battle and from wounds and disease.
