Sommerheim Park Archaeological District, west of Erie, Pennsylvania, preserves six unusually undisturbed archaeological sites along one of the area’s few undeveloped Lake Erie shorelines. Its importance lies in the long span of human activity represented there, from the full Archaic period through the Early and Middle Woodland period. Excavations uncovered especially dense Late Archaic remains, including stone tools, traces of houses, and evidence that bluff-top areas were used seasonally by fishing and hunting groups. First brought to wider attention in 1975, the district has yielded rare, well-preserved Native American campsite evidence on the Lake Erie plain and retains strong potential for further discoveries.
