Dutchess Quarry Cave Site in Goshen, New York, occupies caves on Mount Lookout within an active quarry property. Archaeological excavations in the 1960s uncovered evidence of hunter-gatherers from about 12,000 years ago, near the end of the last Ice Age, including a rare Paleo-Indian fluted point. At the time, this made it the oldest known site of its kind east of the Mississippi. Since then, the site’s significance has been balanced against continued gravel and dolomite mining. Orange County preserved the most important 20 acres, and the property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and expanded in 1997.
