William Chamberlain wrote on August 4, 1849, of coming to the Sink of St Marys by a dreary road “dessolate as a frozen lake.” Granite Point, noted by emigrants, lies to the northwest on the west branch of the California Trail along the Emigrant Trail-Humboldt River Route.
